For the first quarter century of my life, I hated warm beverages. There was a stretch of a few years when I drank an iced red eye from La Colombe nearly every day, even in blizzards. Last winter, the heat was broken in my apartment, and I was forced to drink hot tea to stay alive -- and I liked it. Now, I drink hot things in the winter and cold things in the summer, like a normal person.

On the first warm(ish) day of spring, there is nothing better than an inaugural cold brew, and in a city of $6 coffees, you should probably start making them at home.

ingredients:

2/3 c ground coffee (medium-coarse grind)

3 c filtered cold water

prep:

  1. add coffee & water to a jar or french press & stir

  2. cover & let sit on the counter overnight

  3. plunge french press or strain through a fine sieve lined with cheese cloth or a coffee filter. repeat if necessary

  4. mix with water or milk to taste

  5. pour over ice (these large ice cubes make everything better)
